NEWSLETTER 01 / 2024

Dear readers, friends and colleagues,

Once more, we would like to wish you all a happy and, above all, peaceful New Year. We hope you were able to use the short winter break to take a deep breath. Unfortunately, the challenges of these days have not diminished in the meantime and for many, even taking a deep breath has become a denied privilege. This makes it all the more important that we continue the work on and for our democratic values.

The ITI is currently looking for theater translators for the International Workshop as part of the Mülheim Theatre Days 2024, applications can be submitted until February 15. The consulting service at touring artists has already resumed, and the upcoming Monthly Meet-Up on January 29 invites actors and interested parties from the games industry in particular to network and exchange ideas. Furthermore there are new dates for the monthly LESERAUM in 2024. And as always we are sharing some updates, events and calls from our network.

WEITERES

Berlin Senate introduces anti-discrimination clause
In the first week of January, Berlin's cultural administration announced the introduction of an anti-discrimination clause, the recognition of which will be mandatory for publicly funded actors in the arts and cultural sector in the future.
In its current form, the clause raises many questions, not least with regard to the potential consequences for international cooperation. The Rat der Künste, among others, has published a statement with criticism and concrete suggestions for improvement. We, too, appeal for a far-sighted consideration of means in dialog with all stakeholders, in the urgently needed fight against anti-Semitism and other forms of discrimination.

Deconfining / On The Move publication: “An invitation to transform your vision of the cultural mobility ethic from an African perspective”
In this contribution, author Ukhona Ntsali Mlandu places an ethic of care at the center of reflections on cultural mobility and social justice. Moving away from traditional formats, her perspective is a complement to formal advocacy work, broadening understanding and stimulating practical change within the paradigms of cultural mobility. The work was produced as part of the Deconfining project in collaboration with On the Move.

Obituary Norbert Kentrup
On December 15, our long-time member, the director, actor and theater manager Norbert Kentrup passed away.

Born in Düsseldorf in 1949, he spent his early years with companions such as Klaus Michael Grüber, Rainer Werner Faßbinder, Kurt Hübner and Peter Palitzsch at the municipal theaters in Bremen, Frankfurt, Bochum and Zurich. In 1984 he founded the Bremer Shakespeare Company. He initiated the Globe Theatre in Neuss and the Shakespeare Globe Zentrum Deutschland, played Falstaff in the opening performance of the new London Globe Theatre in 1993 and was the only German actor to be a member of its artistic board for many years. In 2001, together with Dagmar Papula, he founded another company in Berlin: Shakespeare und Partner. He traveled, directed, gave lectures and taught. "Popular theater in the sense of 'theater for all' was a matter close to his heart," writes Renate Heitmann, Managing Director of the Bremen Shakespeare Company, in her obituary.
